RAL 7016 anthracite grey is the default architectural shade for industrial and commercial buildings, and it is also one of the shades that shows surface defects most clearly. A pale panel hides a small blister; a dark grey one does not. This coil is therefore built with a coating film that has been tested to 1000 hours of neutral salt spray with scribe creep staying under two millimetres, on an AZ150 aluzinc substrate.

Salt spray testing is often quoted loosely, so it is worth being precise: the figure refers to a scribed panel in a standard salt fog chamber, and it measures how far corrosion spreads from an intentional scratch. It is a comparative measure of edge protection, not a promise of service life in years.

Does the dark color reduce corrosion performance?

Not directly, but dark surfaces run hotter and that accelerates coating degradation. Higher build and UV stable pigments compensate, which is why this coil uses a heavier film than a pale shade of the same range.

Is RAL 7016 consistent across batches?

It is one of the harder shades to keep uniform because small pigment differences are visible. We measure every batch and retain a sample panel for two years for comparison.

What fixing system do you recommend?

Coated self drilling screws with EPDM washers in a matching shade, installed to the profile manufacturer's torque setting so the washer seals without deforming the panel.

Packing and Traceability

Coils are wrapped in PVC film with paper interleaving, strapped on wooden pallets and labelled with heat number, coating batch and salt spray test reference. For dark shades we add an outer paper wrap to limit heat build up in the container, which reduces the risk of surface marking on arrival.

Where a project specification names a salt spray hour figure, we supply the test reference that corresponds to the actual batch delivered rather than a generic certificate for the product family. That distinction matters during a compliance review, because a generic report does not prove anything about the material on site.

The 1000 hour figure in this description refers to a scribed panel held in a neutral salt fog chamber to ASTM B117 or EN ISO 9227. The panel is scratched through to the substrate and the result is reported as scribe creep, the distance corrosion travels sideways from that scratch. Buyers should compare that creep figure rather than the headline hour count, because hours alone say nothing about cut-edge performance after installation.

The substrate is Aluzinc AZ150. The AZ designation describes the aluminium-zinc alloy coating weight, which is what gives cut edges and drilled holes their sacrificial protection. A higher coating weight extends time to red rust, but it also changes forming behaviour, so the grade should be matched to the exposure class of the finished building.

Coating thickness matters more than coating brand in service: Top 25 - 28 micron, primer 5 - 7 micron. Below roughly 20 micron total build, UV exposure in strong sun starts to chalk the surface within a few years, and the colour drifts before the steel itself shows any problem.
