35 Micron Anti Chalking PPGL Steel Coil for Coastal Roof Cladding
Coastal roofs face a combination that inland roofs do not: salt laden air that attacks every exposed edge, high humidity that keeps the surface wet longer, and intense sun that degrades the binder. A thin decorative coating fails quickly in that environment. This PPGL steel coil carries a 35 micron total coating build with anti chalking pigments, which is roughly forty percent more film than a standard roofing product, and the extra thickness buys time at exactly the moment the coating starts to lose gloss.
Film thickness alone is not the whole story. Beyond about 30 micron the coating must be formulated for the build, otherwise internal stress causes cracking at bends. The primer and top coat here are matched as a system rather than simply applied thicker.

Why Coastal Roofs Need This
- Thicker film holds back chloride attack for longer between inspections.
- Anti chalking pigments resist the bleaching effect of intense reflected sunlight.
- AZ150 substrate protects cut edges where salt reaches bare steel first.
- QUV tested gloss retention confirms performance, not just initial appearance.
- Formulated for high build so the thicker film still bends without cracking.
Coastal Applications
- Seaside resort and hotel roofing
- Port warehouses and terminal buildings
- Coastal residential developments
- Aquaculture and marine support buildings
Frequently Asked Questions
How close to the sea can this coil be used?
For most projects within one kilometre of the shoreline we recommend this build with AZ150 substrate. Closer than about 200 metres, or on a direct spray path, we suggest a higher performance coating system and annual inspection.
What does 1000 hour salt spray actually prove?
It shows how far corrosion creeps from a scribed line in a standard test. It is a comparative indicator, not a service life prediction, which is why we also quote the QUV result for color performance.
Is 35 micron harder to form?
It requires a matched formulation. Our system passes 2T at 0.5 mm, but for very tight profiles you should share the drawing so we confirm the film build against the bend radius.
Can fixings be supplied to match?
Self drilling screws with coated heads and EPDM washers are available in matching shades so the roof does not show a grid of bare metal spots.
Packing for Sea Transit
Coils ship eye to sky with PVC film, paper interleaving and steel strapping on wooden pallets. For coastal destinations we add desiccant and a heavier outer wrap, because condensation inside a container during a long voyage is one of the most common causes of surface marking on arrival.
Maintenance Rhythm
On a coastal roof we suggest a wash down once a year to remove salt deposits, ideally before the dry season. Salt left on the surface holds moisture against the coating and accelerates chalking at the edges of panels, which is where most visible deterioration begins.
The substrate is Aluzinc AZ150. The AZ designation describes the aluminium-zinc alloy coating weight, which is what gives cut edges and drilled holes their sacrificial protection. A higher coating weight extends time to red rust, but it also changes forming behaviour, so the grade should be matched to the exposure class of the finished building.
Coating thickness matters more than coating brand in service: Top 28 - 30 micron, primer 5 - 7 micron. Below roughly 20 micron total build, UV exposure in strong sun starts to chalk the surface within a few years, and the colour drifts before the steel itself shows any problem.
Formability is specified as T bend 2T at 0.5 mm, no cracking. This determines whether the strip can be roll formed and folded at the job site without cracking the coating over the bend radius, which is the most common cause of premature coating failure on roofing panels.

8 metric tons. Smaller trial runs are quoted separately because coating line setup cost per ton rises sharply below that volume.
15 - 25 days after deposit, counted from receipt of the deposit. Gauge, width and whether the shade is held in stock all affect the schedule.

On this specification the coating build is Top 28 - 30 micron, primer 5 - 7 micron and the expected service life is 25 years color retention for coastal C4 exposure. Durability figures assume the material is installed and maintained within the environment class stated.
Yes. On this specification the substrate is Aluzinc AZ150 and bending performance is T bend 2T at 0.5 mm, no cracking, which covers normal profiling and standing seam forming.
ISO 9001, EN 10169, EN 10346. Mill certificates and third party test reports can be issued with the shipment.
