A dowel is a cylindrical rod, usually made of wood, metal, or plastic, used to precisely align or join two components together. Dowels are commonly employed in woodworking and mechanical engineering to ensure accurate positioning and to enhance the strength of joints. In woodworking, wooden dowels are inserted into corresponding holes in two adjacent pieces to create strong, hidden joints. In metal applications, steel dowel pins are used in machinery to maintain alignment or absorb shear forces. Dowels come in various sizes and can be plain or fluted to improve adhesive grip.
